What kind of Scanners do you use?

Postby railzfan on Fri Apr 27, 2007 12:20 pm

Hello all,

I was just wondering what kind of scanners the rest of you use? I use a Radio Shack PRO-94, 1,000 Channel, Dual-Trunking Scanner, I have been using it for about two years now and really like it. It sure comes in handy while out train-chasing and when the weather gets nasty. I would like to get a newer and better one in the future, but for now this is good.

What scanners do you use and can you suggest or recommend?

Thanks:)

I have several. This isn't a complete list, but these are the radios I use the most.

1- Relm 200 Channel handheld.

2- Yaesu/Vertex VX-150.

3 - Motorola MCX100 Mobile.

4 - Motorola MCX100 Base (2 of them)

5 - Bearcat 210XLT 40-channel base.

6 - Motorola Radius P200 6-channel handheld.

I'd say the VX-150. The price is very reasonable, and the reception is unreal. If you're interested, Universal Radio has them on sale for $114.95 which includes a free 2nd battery pack. The normal retail price is over $160. One caution, it is a amateur radio transceiver, but you can legally use it to just monitor railroad frequencies. Just don't try to talk on the ham frequencies and you'll be fine.

Is the VX 150 able to be used with atcsmon? I have wanted to buy a scanner for so long but I can never get myself to spend the money. I never knew which one to get either. But this VX 150 sounds fun. Should I purchase it or should I just pick one up at radioshack?
Thanks guys.

For ATCS montoring, you'll need a scanner capable of receiving 800/900 mhz, as well the ability to be modified.

For just listening to the railroad, the VX-150 is hard to beat.
