and I "remember" it as being a BLACK sign with white letters that have reflector "dots" (glass jewels or "Cats eyes") in the strokes of the lettering.
I am sure the glass jewel reflectors were expensive and were phased out many years ago.
I have been searching the web for photos and have found only one tiny, blurry GIF image file of it at:
http://www.laurellines.org/laurlines.htm
(About 2/3s the way down on the left.)
The majority of what I have found is that every state (and the Feds) has documentation available that shows this sign is officially known as an "R8-8" that is the usual highway sign with a black boarder around a reflective white background with black letters (and no cat's eyes) with the words 'center justified' as:
+-----------+
. DO NOT .
.. STOP ....
.... ON .....
. TRACKS .
+-----------+
(I added the periods to try to show the center justification.) Anybody have any better photos or drawings showing the sign as black with white letters and the cat's eye reflectors? I want to know font, size, and number of reflectors per character stroke, etc.
I would not have spent so long in my web search if the Greatful Dead had not done a song (?) of that title.
I also found many "Blogs" where people seriously question the need for such a sign and find it ridiculous that the signs are posted... considering them to be a waste of time and money and the earth's natural resources.
